Killer?
This poster series was produced as part of an assignment where the task was to depict a chosen social issue. It is well known that sharks have inhabited planet Earth since before Dinosaurs and even trees. Sharks are fundamental to our ecosystem as they keep our oceans in balance, yet, shark finning is still a very common practice. Shark fin soup is a popular dish in various countries. However, the mass killing of sharks is detrimental to our environment. Sharks are caught, and their fins get cut off while they’re still alive. The carcass is then thrown back into the ocean where the shark slowly drowns to death at the bottom of the ocean.
This series aimed to depict this gruesome act with an impactful, easy-to-understand, minimalistic approach. The image of the shark was printed and scanned multiple times, then interpolated over each other in Adobe Photoshop where type and other edits were added. The fins on the shark were ripped by hand before scanning in to acquire the desired look.
The tagline of these posters is a commentary on the unjustified fear humans have of sharks due to their portrayal in the media. According to the Australian Institute of Marine Biology, around 10 deaths yearly are attributable to sharks worldwide.
